WHAT YOU NEED TO TAKE FOR THE SALKANTAY TREK

  • Hiking Boots – Lightweight, comfortable, and with good grip
  • Water Storage – A Camelbak-style reservoir is recommended, or bottles with a capacity of at least 2-3 liters

  • 1 Fleece Jacket A warm fleece is great for layering and provides insulation during cooler temperatures.

Day 1Cusco – Mollepata – Soraypampa – Humantay Lake

🚐 Early morning pick-up from Cusco by Allpackers Expeditions team
🥾 Hiking distance: ~10 km / 6.2 mi
🛏️ Overnight: Soraypampa (Tents)

🚐 Pick-up: 4:30 a.m. from your hotel in Cusco.

🚙 Drive: Cusco → Mollepata → Challacancha (start of the trek).

Start your adventure with a scenic drive to Mollepata, followed by a delicious breakfast. Begin the hike towards Soraypampa, where you’ll be greeted by your first stunning views of the Andes. In the afternoon, hike up to the turquoise waters of Humantay Lake — a sacred and photogenic spot.
All meals and camp services are provided by Allpackers Expeditions.

Day 2Soraypampa – Salkantay Pass – Chaullay

🥾 Hardcore day.
Climb to: Salkantay Pass (4,650 m / 15,255 ft) – highest point of the trek.
🧊 Expect: Epic views of glaciers, towering peaks, and a real sense of “holy sh*t I’m in the Andes.”

⏬ Descent: Down into the high jungle to Chaullay (2,900 m / 9,514 ft).
🕒 Total hiking: 9–10 hours.
📍 Campsite: Chaullay – warmer weather, more oxygen, and less drama from your lungs.
🍽️ Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner.
🦟 Allpackers Tip: Time to break out the bug spray—the mosquitoes down here don’t mess around.

The toughest day, but hands down the most beautiful. We’ll conquer the mighty Salkantay Pass (4630 m / 15,190 ft), surrounded by ice and rock, before descending into the warm and colorful cloud forest. Keep your eyes open—you might spot hummingbirds, toucans, and even the elusive Andean fox or deer.


Day 3 Chaullay – La Playa

🌴 Jungle vibes incoming.
🥾 Hike: 5–6 hours through lush cloud forest, coffee plantations, waterfalls, and exotic birds.
💦 Optional activity: Visit Cocalmayo Hot Springs – the jungle’s version of a luxury spa.

📍 Campsite: La Playa ((2400 m / 7874 ft))
🍽️ Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner.

Welcome to tropical paradise! We’ll hike alongside the Lluskamayo River through a lush area filled with waterfalls, fruit trees, and coffee plantations. The terrain gets easier, giving you more time to enjoy the scenery and breathe in the jungle vibe.


Day 4La Playa – Llactapata – Hidroelectrica – Aguas Calientes

Today features a hidden gem: the Llactapata Inca ruins, perched high with a breathtaking view of Machu Picchu from a unique angle. After exploring the site, we descend to the Hydroelectric Station and continue walking to Aguas Calientes, the base town of Machu Picchu.

Day 5Aguas Calientes – Machu Picchu – Cusco

🚍 Early bus: Up to Machu Picchu (approx. 6:00 a.m.).
🧭 Guided tour: 2 hours through the Lost City of the Incas – temples, terraces, and legends.
📸 Free time: Explore on your own or climb Huayna Picchu/Machu Picchu Mountain (must be booked in advance).

🚆 Return: Train to Ollantaytambo + van to Cusco.
🕓 Arrival in Cusco: Around 8:00 p.m.

The big day is here! We’ll catch the first bus to Machu Picchu and enter as the gates open. Enjoy a 2-hour guided tour exploring the most iconic spots and learning the rich history of the Incas. Afterward, you’ll have free time to explore more or climb Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain (with prior permits). In the afternoon, train and bus back to Cusco.
