Expect altitude from start to finish—thin air, cold wind, and views that look Photoshopped. You’ll travel through remote Andean villages, cross wide valleys dotted with alpacas and llamas, and hike toward one of the most colorful mountains on Earth. The final viewpoint rewards you with a panorama of Rainbow Mountain and the mighty Ausangate Glacier towering behind it.
We start early to beat the crowds and give you the best chance of clear skies. Our team collects you directly from your accommodation.
After about 2 hours, we stop in Cusipata for a hot, fresh breakfast. Local dishes, bread, coffee, tea—everything you need before facing altitude head-on.
A short drive brings you to the starting point at 4,630 m (15,190 ft). You’ll immediately see the massive Ausangate range dominating the horizon.
The trail begins wide and relatively flat, crossing high-Andean plains where alpacas, llamas, and Quechua herders outnumber tourists. Your guide keeps a steady, safe pace.
The last stretch is steep and slow due to the altitude. Take it easy—your lungs will thank you. Once you reach the ridge… you’ll understand why this place became world-famous.
Your guide explains:
The mineral makeup that creates the rainbow colors
Local Andean traditions and the spiritual significance of Ausangate
How climate and geology formed the landscape
You’ll have enough time for photos, videos, and simply staring at nature’s paint job.
The downhill is easier and gives you more time to enjoy the scenery.
Back in Cusipata, enjoy a well-deserved buffet lunch featuring Peruvian classics and vegetarian options.
Rest on the drive back. Arrival time is around 4:00–5:00 PM.
